"How can I bring joy when I now know we are bringing misery to thousands of innocent people?"
―Emily, to Sera, questioning about her role

Emily is a seraphim angel and a major supporting character in Hazbin Hotel who made her debut in "Welcome to Heaven".

After learning about the "Extermination", Emily promises Charlie Morningstar that she will help in her dream about redeeming sinners. She is later seen trying to find a way to fix the mistakes made by Heaven and to avoid a potential war against Hell.

In "Weapon of Mass Distraction" and "Curtain Call", Emily joined forces with Charlie and her friends to stop Vox's plan to conquer Heaven, saving the lives of many sinners, including Alastor himself, from the angelical weapon known as the "Might of Lilith", suffering a wounded wing in the process. She collaborated with many Overlords, sinners, Charlie and her friends to stop the weapon from exploding and destroying Pentagram City.

After confirming to everyone in Hell that redemption is possible, and finally achieving peace between the realms, Emily is now actively helping with the Hotel, constantly visiting and sending gifts from Heaven as well as being in charge of welcoming any future redeemed souls who ascend to Heaven.

Appearance

Humanoid form

In her humanoid form, Emily takes the appearance of a tall and slim young woman with silver-like skin, black lips, and mid-thigh-length hair with bangs styled in a somewhat messy way, colored in a gradient of periwinkle with noticeable white tips.

Her eyes have light blue sclera with white-outlined darker-colored pupils and bushy, dark indigo eyelashes, and her eyelids are perano-colored, while her three freckles are white and are located on each of her cheeks and her nose. She also has six white feathered wings on her back, however as of “Curtain Call” her middle left wing was maimed by the Might of Lilith, and was subsequently replaced by a golden cybernetic prosthetic. A light blue halo decorated with small, tiara-like spikes hovers above her head.

Emily wears princess-inspired clothing which consists of a light periwinkle gown with a darker-colored stripe around the high-frilled turtleneck collar, darker-colored trimming and details on the short light blue puffed sleeves, a darker-blue star-pattern on the chest, and darker-blue triangular-like patterns on the hem with small diamond shaped between the mounds. In addition, she accessorizes with a light blue sash worn around her thin waist, and wears a pair of white tights underneath.

She also wears a set of long fingerless, periwinkle-gray opera gloves which covers most of her arms, which appears to be skin-tight and act as long sleeves for her dress. For footwear, she wore blue ballerina flats.

Angelic form

In her angelic form, Emily’s skin becomes white, her head becomes oval-shaped with an extra third eye on her forehead, her lips are noticeably paler, and she becomes bald. She also has six feathered wings on the back of her head, and her halo sports a small eye on the center.

Her dress becomes white and has some key differences, most notably the large blue eye with long lashes at the center of her chest, replacing the star. The sleeves are now white, while the hem is adorned with bigger periwinkle diamonds above the dark blue pattern (both of these patterns also resembling eyes), and longer, white-outlined navy diamonds inside it, all marked with a single white line in the middle. She also has a white feathery neckline and petticoat.

Personality

Emily is excitable, bubbly, sweet, friendly and kind to almost everyone around her. She does not discriminate others based on mistakes or who they are, where she excitedly greeted Charlie and welcomed her to Heaven, despite her being a demon. She compliments Sera in personality, with Sera the most serious and Emily the more bubbly. Working alongside Sera, her job is to preserve the happiness and joy of the human souls that ascend to Heaven.

Emily also holds a great amount of sympathy towards human souls and sees them all as equal, much like Charlie, as she is disgusted and horrified upon learning about the extermination.

She is also shown to engage deeply in the things that she believes in, such as when she promises Charlie to find a way to help her. As shown in "Welcome to Heaven" and "The Show Must Go On", Emily believes in Charlie's dream of rehabilitating sinners and allowing them into Heaven, and was delighted to see Sir Pentious ascending into Heaven, proving that it was indeed possible for a sinner demon to be redeemed.

Despite her positivity, Emily can be a little slow and awkward. This is shown when she initially forgets to tell to Sir Pentious that he can't leave Heaven, and forgets to tell Charlie that he is alive and living as a redeemed soul until just as Sera is isolating Heaven from other realms. She unintentionally makes Sir Pentious feel depressed with her comment on how unique and special he is, though she tries her best effort to make him feel comfortable and enjoy Heaven. Her enthusiasm also makes her impulsive, like when she, in a hyperventilated way, shows Sir Pentious numerous places around Heaven for him to enjoy at once rather than show him around gradually to assimilate to his new reality. However, she is also able to learn from her mistakes and try alternate methods to help, such as creating four new Egg Boiz for Sir Pentious, who finally trusts her afterwards.

In "Silenced", Emily believes that they could figure things out with Hell by going down there, apologizing, and bringing gift baskets as apologies for everyone, completely oblivious that the actions from the Exorcists in every Extermination made people in Hell develop a deep-seated resentment that wouldn't just go away with nice words or gifts. Upon returning to Heaven after Vox's declaration of war on the angels, Emily burst into tears and apologized to Sir Pentious for everything they put Hell through.

In "Curtain Call", Emily showcases the true extent of her empathy and her good nature, openly working with Charlie and her friends to stop Vox, as well as saving several sinners from being killed by Vox's massive angelical weapon, the "Might of Lilith", to the point of risking her own life. She is also shown to be very brave and determined to protect everyone, regardless of being sinners of Hell, being the first to approach the weapon in an attempt to stop it, without a moment of hesitation. Later in the episode, Emily constantly visits Hell and is seen helping with the Hotel and its redemption project and preparing for the arrival of future redeemed souls, giving them a warm and cheerful welcome to Heaven.

Trivia

  • Emily, along with Sera, has an otherworldly, many-eyed angelic form she changes between her more human-like form. She can also cause more eyes to appear on her halo and dress. However, it is unknown whether this shift between appearances is a result of transformation or a heavenly disguise.
  • Emily shares similarities with a discarded ZooPhobia character with the same name. The Emily of ZooPhobia was a sword-wielding angel who was one of the planned angels for the webcomic.
  • As part of the "Hazbin Hotel x Animate Cafe" collaboration event held in Japan from October 8 to December 12, 2025, there was a menu item referring to Sera and Emily as "Seraphim Sisters",[2] Them being sisters is confirmed canon within the Hazbin Hotel series in "Weapon of Mass Distraction".
  • Pangolins are implied to be Emily's favorite animal as she summons a lot of them in front of Sir Pentious to snuggle with, encourages him to play a pangolin-themed arcade game, and then summon even more during the song, Like You.
  • In a Bluesky post, Sam Miller explains that Emily's portal in "New Pentious" and "Storyteller" was based on the stage prop "bubble" from Wicked that Glinda comes down in.[3]
