- "I spent my whole life of being afraid of you, but I'm not giving up the only good thing I've ever had just so you can keep your fragile little sense of control over everything. Millie is a good woman, a better woman than I deserve. And there's nothing that scares me more than hurting her, not even you. I'm leaving, dad. And, if you or Herpes the Clown over here try to stop me, you'll learn firsthand just how good I've gotten at my job."
- ―Moxxie, standing up to his father
Exes and Oohs is the third episode of the second season of Helluva Boss and is the eleventh episode overall. It premiered on March 11, 2023, on Vivziepop's YouTube channel.[1]
Synopsis[]
- Moxxie visits his childhood home and things sure do happen.
Plot[]
A typical day at I.M.P office begins when Moxxie tells Loona he lost some weight, in response to her calling him fat in previous instances. Millie suddenly barges in, violently embittered, because she bumped into her ex-boyfriend earlier. She complains about how he went on about how rich he was with a bright future and a bigger dick, much to Moxxie's jealousy. In her rage, Millie then punches a storage cupboard releasing hundreds of pictures. Blitzo, currently talking on the phone, comes out from his office upset about the commotion. Moxxie apologizes for the outburst and picks up the photos, which depicts imp porn, before Blitzo snatches it away and claims it is his "research". Returning to his office, Blitzo resumes his conversation with a client, who invites them to his estate in Greed, and when he accepts, a run-down helicopter destroys the left wall, much to Blitzo's annoyance as it is the fifth time the wall has been destroyed now. The imps then are taken to the Greed Ring where they meet the client who revealed to be Moxxie's father.
Crimson introduces himself to Blitzo, who takes a liking to Crimson complimenting him, and Millie, who introduces herself as Moxxie's wife, before they are ushered inside for dinner. While sitting in the parlor, Moxxie inquires why Crimson invited them. Crimson chastises him for asking, before stating they are still waiting for one guest. At that moment, another demon bursts into the door, Chazwick Thurman, Millie's ex-boyfriend, and, to their mutual surprise, also Moxxie's ex-boyfriend. Millie is shocked that they dated, while Blitzo is furious that both of them had sex with the same person. Moxxie explains they met during Moxxie's initiation into the mafia, while revealing he was born and raised in a mafia, to Blitzo's shock. Moxxie and Chaz kept the relationship years ago, before Chaz abandoned him during a heist. After Moxxie was thrown in prison, it was there he met Blitzo who planned to help him escape and begin business together. Millie tries to kill Chaz for his deed, but is interrupted when a maid alerts them all that dinner is ready. When dinner comes, Crimson explained that the real reason he invited Blitzo's team was because he wished to welcome Chaz into the family, in order to receive funds from Chaz's purportedly high wealth. Moxxie and Millie are against this, but Crimson insists that after they were done they would return to their normal lives. When everyone leaves, Crimson demands to speak to Moxxie alone, where it is revealed he wanted to marry him over to Chaz, despite him already being married to Millie. Crimson threatens that if Moxxie refuses, he and Millie will pay severely, causing Moxxie to remember his horrible childhood and losing his mother years ago.
Afterwards, Millie goes to Moxxie, but one of Crimson’s goons tells them that they had to sleep in separate rooms. Millie was worried for Moxxie since he didn’t protest, but he kept his mouth shut, remembering his father’s threatening words, and told her everything would be fine. When he goes to his room, Chaz is already there and tries to seduce Moxxie into loving him again by singing to him. Moxxie responds by kicking him out of his room. Chaz tries to seduce Millie next, only to be threatened by a knife at the throat, and finally convinces Blitzo into having sex with him. Afterward, while Chaz is asleep, Blitzo, dissappointed by the mediocre sex, becomes suspicious. He steals his jacket and car keys, and discovers Chaz was never rich, and his intentions were to marry Moxxie for his dad's fortune. Before Blitzo has a chance to warn the others, Chaz tranquilizes him and stuffs him in his trunk. The next morning, Millie goes to find Blitzo, and Moxxie stands up to Crimson, saying he won't go through with the arrangement, threatening that if he tried to hurt his family, he would show them how good he was at his job. However, Crimson has Alessio electrocute Moxxie. Later, Millie finds Blitzo, and after killing two members of the mafia who tried to kill her, Blitzo tells Millie what Chaz was up to, but the entire estate is on lockdown.
In the courtyard, the marriage begins with Moxxie in a wedding gown with his arms tied up and mouth gagged. The priest skips to the ceremonial vows when suddenly, Blitzo and Millie crash the wedding with Chaz's car. Millie fights all of Crimson's goons, turning the wedding into a massacre, before walking up to the alter and takes Moxxie away, to Crimson's begrudging acquiescence. Chaz tries to protest, but Millie chucks a dildo on a stick down his throat, shouting that Moxxie's ass was hers, and spanks him dramatically, making Moxxie blush. Blitzo tells Crimson that Chaz wasn't rich as they fly off into the helicopter they came in. This makes Crimson angry, as he looks at Chaz, who chuckles nervously.
The helicopter crashes into I.M.P office where Loona remained where she was yesterday, and Millie tells Moxxie he could've just told her about his dad. They both hug it out and Blitzo bragged about how he had sex with Chaz, relishing how all three of them have had mutual sex with Chaz now. Meanwhile, back at Crimson's mansion, Crimson places Chaz's teeth on his wall of trophies, indicating he had Chaz murdered for lying to him and using him. A furious Crimson then throws a knife at his family portrait, the knife hitting an image of young Moxxie at his forehead, in response to his now estranged son for defying him.

Trivia[]
- This is the first Helluva Boss episode to air in 2023.
- This episode has scenes shown in animatics and storyboards from the 2022 trailer, to which some shots were completed and improved.
- It is revealed that Moxxie and Blitzo met in prison, where they were cellmates.
- In prison Blitzo and Moxxie's uniforms are shown to both include the number "69" on them.
- Blitzo also mentions having a babysitter for Loona when he was in prison.
- This marks the first episode for Stolas to not appear or be mentioned in Season 2.
- Moxxie's surname is revealed to be Knolastname and that Millie took his surname during the wedding.
- It is revealed that Moxxie grew up in the Greed Ring. However, this contradicts his stating he was native to the Wrath Ring from "The Harvest Moon Festival".
- It was later clarified by writer, Adam Neylan, that Moxxie was indeed born in Wrath and that his mother was from there. However, Moxxie was raised and spent most of his life in Greed, hence, he is not very "country vibe" or "wrathian values".[2]
- After Millie kills one of Crimson's gang members, salmon sushi splatters out of him along with blood.
- Additionally, during the dinner scene between I.M.P, Chaz, and Crimson, the same salmon-like steak is served between them, implying that Chaz is somewhat of a cannibal.
- Millie refers to Chaz as "an ex" in the beginning of the episode, suggesting that she has had other partners aside from Chaz and Moxxie.
- This episode features the guest music of California indie-band "Until Further Notice" who provided the song "Crashin' a Muthafuckin' Wedding". The band has also previously done music for the early works of Brandon Rogers.
- Much like the episode "C.H.E.R.U.B", the dildos shown in the episode were censored due to YouTube's restrictions on sexual content.
- According to Monica Franco, her computer crashed twice during two of the scenes due to the amount of dildos on-screen.[3]
- According to the Helluva Boss animation lead, Chii, this also happened to her as well.[4]
- According to Monica Franco, her computer crashed twice during two of the scenes due to the amount of dildos on-screen.[3]
- According to storyboard artist, Arielle Somerville, since none of the actors recorded for the part during the Blitzo and Chaz off-screen sex scene, they were assigned to place a stock sex sound effect into the board, which made it into the final animation.[5]
- Chazwick's license place spells "HGECOK", a word play of "huge cock".
- Inside Chaz's car, it is shown that he has an eviction notice that reads, "Listen, you asshole. Leave the fucking house by the 6th of this month or we will kill you, we do NOT care about you and your huge cock. Fuck you."
- The different radio stations available include "Mammon Channel™️", "Station 69", "Lusty Tunes", "Station 66.6", "Station 80.085", and "Wrath's #1 "F*ck You Up" Hits".
- Station 66.6 is a reference for 666, while 80.085 is a reference to when the numbers are written on a calculator spells BOOBS.
- The different radio stations available include "Mammon Channel™️", "Station 69", "Lusty Tunes", "Station 66.6", "Station 80.085", and "Wrath's #1 "F*ck You Up" Hits".
- The combination of the names of Crimson and his bodyguard, Alessio, can be read as "Crim n' Al", a joke on the word "criminal".[6]
- It is revealed that Blitzo's office now has a "Nut Button" that summons a cardboard cutout of a human used for target practice and formerly a bust-sized statue of Blitzo that was broken by Millie.
- Blitzo reveals that I.M.P used to handle assassination business within Hell. And, although not mentioned, they could have changed to having mostly Earth-related cases after acquiring Stolas' grimoire.
- According to Vivienne Medrano, of the episodes that were released at the time, the most challenging/longest episode on the technical side would be "Exes and Oohs". She added that it was a complicated time for this episode and the previous episode, "Seeing Stars", because production for the first season of Hazbin Hotel had just begun.[7]
- According to prop designer, Perla Cambara, who designed Moxxie's phone display, she came up with the surname "Knolastname" as a placeholder and was surprised it made it to the final animation.[8]
- According to storyboard artist, Kaden Westenbrook, one of the Imp gangsters shown carrying sacks of stolen goods has the sack with the words "Mamon Logo" written on it coincidentally walking with two other fellow gangsters carrying bags with actual logos of Mammon. The writing was supposed to be a placeholder for the animators to insert the actual logo design on the prop, and was surprised it was left in the final animation as a joke.[9]
- Hell's justice system is briefly touched upon again in the episode. Although, it still remains unclear how their laws work, as one can get sued for copyright, as evident in "Loo Loo Land", and murder seems to not be an issue, but robbing a bank can get one landed in jail.
- The uncensored version of the wedding scene, as shown in one of the episode's artist's Twitter, reveals that the dildos were drawn on with smiley faces and were wearing small tuxedos.[citation needed]
- The inclusion of 3D effects is used again, specifically during the scene where it pans over from Crimson to the framed piece of Chaz's severed jaws.
- Most things shown floating in the water of of one of the flashbacks are things that typically should not be able to float.
- It is shown in Moxxie's Sinstagram that he is friends with demons named Randal, Oliver, and Steve. Randal being the name of Richard Horvitz's real life friend who broke his leg.
- It's also shown that Oliver told Randal to break a leg, to wish him good luck, only for him to actually break his leg, which caused Oliver to be the one to perform in Randal's place.
- Crimson was shown pouring a glass of HellFire aged-scotch.
- The chord that Chazwick pulls in Moxxie's room to turn on the "Cum Zone" sign is in the shape of a butt plug.
Cultural References[]
- The episode title is a reference to the Xs and Os people put at the end of text messages, signifying kisses and hugs, respectively.
- The title could also be a reference to a song with a similar name by country and rock singer, Elle King.
- Blitzo's self-drawn chart of horses on his whiteboard is a reference to character shipping and the idea of fan headcanons being implemented to fictional characters. He "headcanons" all the horses as transgender, with one of them seemingly "thinking [they're] straight" and another being transphobic.
- In actuality, according to storyboard artist Amanda Heard, the chart was based on a real shipping chart Heard made when she worked in a fast food restaurant before joining the series albeit with fast-food mascots. After telling the experience to production lead Sam Miller, she convinced her to implant the concept into the series, replacing the mascots with horses.[10]
- Loona's shocked reaction at Millie throwing her mug could be a reference to a certain expression made by the Dark Teensies throughout the video game Rayman Legends.
- According to sound designer Kennedy Phillips, the background sound effects and ambiance for when I.M.P enters the Greed Ring is based on the rhythm of the song "Money?" by Pink Floyd.[11]
- Crimson's voice and mannerisms are patterned after Marlon Brando's portrayal of Vito Corleone from The Godfather. He is also seen with a Marlon Brando-esque imp in one of his photos.
- A scene in Moxxie's flashback, in which Chaz confesses his love to Moxxie using cardboard signs with text, parodies the Christmas caroler scene from the film Love Actually.
- It is pointed out by Blitzo that Moxxie's purported flashback to Chaz painting his nude portrait and his remark that "it has been 84 years" are clear references to James Cameron's Titanic.
- The note Blitzo finds in Chaz's car detailing his harebrained scheme to make profit is a reference to the South Park episode "Gnomes".
- The "S" drawn on "Chaz's Mastur Plan!" is a reference to the "Cool S" graffiti popularized in the early 1970s.
- The smiling mouth gag that Moxxie was wearing during the wedding is a nod to the holographic mouth from the Membracelet gag in the Nickelodeon movie, Invader Zim: Enter the Florpus. Coincidentally, both shows feature Richard Horvitz voicing the main character.
- Blitzo's phrase "doing a Shrek" references to the scene in the first Shrek film where the titular character dramatically disrupts a wedding ceremony to voice his disapproval. Blitzo even yells out "I object!" to add into the reference.
- One of the shark goons, Giancarlo, is dressed in white clown face-paint, a likely reference to DC Comics' The Joker.
- The squeaky-voiced shark pilot might be a nod to Hanna-Barbara's Jabberjaw.
- Chazwick Thurman's name may be a reference to late American actor Chadwick Boseman, who was most notable for his portrayal of the Marvel Comics superhero, Black Panther, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
- The part where Millie drives the truck while strangling one of the mafia shark goons references a scene from the Popee The Performer episode "Swallower", where Kedamono drags Popee from behind his truck.
- After Millie kills some of Crimson's Mafia goons and takes Moxxie with her, she says "This [Moxxie's] ass is mine!" to Chazwick, which is a reference to where Principal Skinner says "Your ass is mine!" in The Simpsons.
- The "Nut Button!!" on the wall of I.M.P's headquarters is a reference to the real-life meme of the blue nut button.
- Additionally, the cardboard cutout of a human that has "Hello! I'm a Hooman!" written on it, which could be a reference to the internet slang term for the word "human", commonly seen in posts where animals or pets are imagined to refer to their owners as.
- The grenade explosion causing a heart of smoke behind Chaz and Moxxie might be a reference to the fake marriage proposal with a similar grenade explosion present in the Japanese manga series, Spy × Family.
- During Chaz Time the way "walnut" comes out of the smoke is a reference to the Regular Show episode "More Smarter".
- Blitzo stealing Chaz's car and cycling through the radio stations until getting to a song he wants and then turning the volume up could be a reference to a scene in the 2017 film Baby Driver in which its protagonist does the same. In both scenes, the characters are in dire situations but do not drive off until the radio is playing the song they wish. Furthermore, both of the cars' dashboards are seen from similar angles and the text displayed on both dashboards is very similar.
- During the scene where Moxxie and Chaz fail to rob a bank in Moxxie's flashback, a lone love lock can be seen in the background on a fence. It is also notably unlocked, symbolizing how, at that moment, Moxxie and Chaz's relationship fell apart.
- The profile picture of Randall, one of Moxxie's friends from social media, is a picture of their pet quieve by a dinner table, a reference to the meme of a yelling woman angrily pointing at a cat with salad also sitting by a dinner table.
Continuity[]
- During the flashback, Crimson tries to have Moxxie kill another demon at a target range, which may possibly be why Moxxie hates theme parks, as shown in the episode "Loo Loo Land".
- In the beginning, Millie's mug is visibly repaired, calling back to the previous episode where she broke it to use as an improvised weapon.
- Blitzo's complaint about the chopper destroying the meeting room's walls rather than using the entrance calls back to Loopty Goopty, Lyle Lipton, and Wally Wackford doing the same thing, Loopty doing it two times, in "C.H.E.R.U.B".
- When Moxxie is looking at photos on his smartphone, there is a picture of him and Millie in cat costumes from the episode.
- The helicopter flies past the charred remains of Loo Loo Land following the aftermath of the episode of the same name.
- It is also shown that Loo Loo Land has been under construction and is being rebuilt since its destruction.
- Two of the imp kids that appeared in the same episode were seen catching some of Blitzo's pictures.
- Crimson being a mob boss is also foreshadowed in "Murder Family", where Moxxie says "Under what circumstances would we ever need to kill a human family? Maybe like a shitty dad...or a mob family...That's understandable."
- Millie doing an elbow drop on the shark mobster, Crunch, is a potential callback to the Harvest Moon Pain Games, where a demon shark does an elbow drop on Moxxie.
- Moxxie insisting to Loona that he is not fat is a callback to when the latter calls him so in the Helluva Boss pilot, "C.H.E.R.U.B", and "Seeing Stars".
Errors[]
- Millie's mug design is missing the white spot on Millie's hair that was present in the previous episode.
- In several scenes, Chaz is animated with all of his teeth.
- When Chaz goes to hide behind Crimson's chair, his arms can be seen under the chair but the rest of his body is behind the chair.
- When Moxxie turns on the tap in his room's bathroom the handle his hand should be on can be seen above his hand.
- When Chaz starts singing to Moxxie while moving around him, there is a frame wherein Moxxie's arm can be seen through Chaz's tail.
- Throughout the episode, Blitzo's horns alternate from having a smooth texture to an edged one.
- Throughout the episode, Chaz's horns also alternate between having a straight upward bend and being curved.
- Upon changing the radio station to Wrath's #1 "F*ck you up" Hits, Blitzo turns up the volume but his hand misses the volume dial.
- When Moxxie first gets thrown into his cell, Blitzo can not be seen in the top bunk of the bed.
- Throughout the flashbacks with a young Moxxie, the tuft of hair springing out of Moxxie's forehead alternates from facing upwards and downwards.
- When Crimson calls Moxxie over privately after Alessio, Blitzo, Millie, and Chaz leaves the room, the dinner plates and the rest of the kitchen utensils disappear from the table.
- For a brief moment, when Crimson tells Moxxie off before the latter leaves, the dildos on the walls stop bouncing around.
