History
Originally, the franchise's universe was simply referred to as the "Hazbin Universe", or shortened to the "Hazbinverse". At unknown point of time, the term "Hellaverse" came to be used instead, however, would sometimes be misspelled as "Helliverse" or "Helluverse", the former of which is used as the location on the official Helluva Boss Twitter account.
Around the time the official Hazbin Hotel Twitter account was created in October of 2021, the franchise's official Updates Twitter account handle was renamed to @HELLAVERSE.
Trivia
- Vivziepop's first depiction of Hell as a location was featured in her popular web-comic, ZooPhobia; it was one that the characters of Hazbin Hotel were originally due to be part of, and that featured in her third-year short-film, Son of 666. However, Vivziepop confirmed that the Hellaverse and ZooPhobia do not share the same universe or version of Hell, stating that their separate Hell theologies are not compatible.[7]
- The setting of Hell in the Hellaverse draws its inspiration from a variety of sources. Vivziepop stated that she didn't want the show to be limited to the perspective of one specific text or religion, instead wanting it to be much broader in concept.[9] Within that idea, Vivziepop incorporated many characters and details from popular demonology texts, such as Dante's Inferno and The Lesser Key of Solomon.
- In a late-2019 livestream, when asked if there is a Limbo in the Hellaverse, Vivziepop responded that while she liked the idea of exploring Limbo in Hazbin Hotel, she didn't know yet if there would be a Limbo as the two main fleshed-out settings are Heaven and Hell that represent the two separate sides people see of good and evil, however, she added that the show might get into Limbo to show the "middle side".[10]
- Vivziepop explained in December of 2020 that while both Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss share the same universe, they have entirely different focuses that don't overlap much, if at all.[11] In a tweet on March 13, 2023, she explained that the two series are two sides of a coin in this Hellaverse and that they take up similar brain space for her, even though they should be treated more separate as they are also structured very differently.[12]
- Vivziepop explained in a tweet that Hazbin Hotel has a grander narrative with a bigger theme, while Helluva Boss is intimate with a smaller scale story and zanier goals. She also stated that the tones are similar, but they are very different stories.[13]
- When talking about the Hellaverse having many sides in an interview on October 17, 2023, Vivziepop explained that the main side deals with Lucifer, and Charlie being the princess of Hell, and Heaven, and kind of big grand themes of redemption, and is much more biblically sourced, whereas Helluva Boss deals with the Deadly Sins and the Hellborn species, and exists separately to the things happening in Hazbin Hotel.[14]
- In December of 2020, Vivziepop explained that Hazbin Hotel is about how "redemption is a hard thing earned", and consequences of past actions, with a cast of mainly people who died and went to Hell, while Helluva Boss follows characters and societies that already exist in Hell, focusing on how the natives and Deadly Sins of Hell work and the interpersonal relationships between characters.[11]
- In an early-2024 interview, Vivziepop explained that Hazbin Hotel, alongside the bigger themes of redemption, sticks to the grander biblical themes, such as dealing with Lucifer, Lilith, Adam, and Eve, as well as people who die and go to Hell, and the Cherubim, Seraphim, Thrones, and the hierarchy of angels.[15]
- In an early-2024 interview, Vivziepop explained that redemption is something she wants to continue to explore in Hazbin Hotel because there is a lot of nuance and it doesn't really have a single answer, as it's different for each person. She added that something she wants to explore in the series is how something that could redeem one person won't redeem another or how someone would have much more that they need to atone for, and also what atonement is for each individual.[16]
- In an early-2024 interview, Vivziepop explained that Helluva Boss, alongside being much more intimate and realistic, feels kind of like a soap opera and a workplace comedy, and centers around things that have to do with class systems, and flawed dysfunctional relationships, and people.[17]
- In a tweet on March 13, 2023, Vivziepop explained that Hazbin Hotel has always had a heavier emphasis on women-led stories, while Helluva Boss has steered more towards male-led stories.[18]
- In an interview on October 17, 2023, Vivziepop explained that there are many things that she wants to add to the Hellaverse as this universe itself is expanding, is very big, and there are many sides to it. Further explaining that, to herself, there is many stories in this universe and lots of things that could either be added to Hazbin Hotel or be their own thing, and she calls it a kind of "ever-expanding Hellaverse".[14]
- In a stream on March 27, 2023, Vivziepop explained that they could never do an episode about it in the Helluva Boss series, but if they ever explored more of the Hellaverse, the Ozzie's club would be a fun setting that could be a fun "workplace comedy" where the bouncer, Jesse, would be a character with his own story.[19]
