―Lute, in Gravity

Lute[3] is the lieutenant of the Exorcists and a major antagonist in Hazbin Hotel who debuted in the episode "Overture".

Formerly Adam's lieutenant, Lute claimed to be the new commander of the Exorcists following his death in "The Show Must Go On" before the seraphims assigned Adam's son, Abel, as the new commander in "Storyteller", with Lute remaining as lieutenant.

Appearance[]

Lute wears attire near identical to other Exorcists, but with her mask's horns curved backwards. The only visual difference from other Exorcists is that her mask's right pupil is a white circle with an X over it instead of a white X. She also usually has bloodstains on her grey minidress.

Under her mask, Lute is revealed to be a humanoid white-skinned angel with pale yellow-golden eyes, black lips, and short pale white hair that has been cut into an asymmetrical bob cut with an undercut. She also appears to have grey eyeshadow for makeup.

In "The Show Must Go On", Lute lost her left arm after ripping it off of her bicep to escape the rubble of the Hazbin Hotel. As revealed in "Storyteller", she is shown to now have a golden prosthetic replacement arm which features Adam's halo around the wrist as a bracelet.

Personality[]

Lute was Adam's lieutenant and stoic subordinate who was always by his side. She and Adam appeared to have a friendly relationship, with Adam complimenting her on her large kill count, and Lute joining him in his antics. Even agreeing with almost everything he would say, such as how angels are perfect and don't make mistakes.

Like Adam, she enjoys her status as an angel and dislikes the very idea that angels can make mistakes. Lute especially shows a sadistic side in demeaning Charlie, specifically on how the Exorcists feel about her and other Hellborn demons. Her sadism was demonstrated in "The Show Must Go On" when she shouted to "rip Vaggi's c*** mouth out her ass!", something that even Adam found excessive.

In regards to demons, she holds deep prejudice and xenophobia towards them, openly referring to them as "filth", "monsters", and in swear words. Like all Exorcists, she doesn't care about sinners and resorts to killing them every year in the Extermination, taking pride in how many demons she's killed. She views sinners in particular as lost causes and incapable of changing, claiming that the only chance they had to access heaven was their life on Earth. She's very rigid with her worldview, and will immediately dismiss anything that contradicts this. Based on her interaction with Charlie, Lute would be happy to target all denizens of Hell, sinner and Hellborn alike, during the Exterminations, and views them collectively as inherently inferior to angels, evil and deserving of their extermination.

When she percieves any threat originating from Hell, Lute is quick to advocate for violence and bloodshed as retaliation. When the exorcists discover one of their own was killed for the first time, Lute is furious at their death and desires retribution, demanding they immediately return to permanently slaughter everyone in Hell to avenge them. This shows her viciousness, but also her impulsiveness, as despite this incident being solid proof that Exorcists are vulnerable and can be killed by demons, Lute wants to dive right into Hell without a plan.

She has also shown to have a strong sense of loyalty to Heaven, as shown when despite despising all demons, sinners and Hellborns alike, she follows the pardon arranged by Lucifer with Heaven for the Exorcists to leave the Hellborn demons alone and only target sinners. However, this changed in "The Show Must Go On", following a period of animosity between Lute and Adam vs Charlie Morningstar and Vaggi, in which they directed the next extermination directly against the Hazbin Hotel and openly attacked some hellborn demons, such as Charlie.

Lute herself is shown to be very loyal to Sera, Emily, and Adam, her superiors, and she follows their orders without hesitation. She takes the more responsible role, making sure to remind Adam of the seriousness of his duties and to follow Sera's orders of keeping the Extermination a secret from the rest of Heaven. Later, despite her burning desire for revenge, Lute nevertheless continued to follow Emily and Sera's commands as the High Seraphims of Heaven, withheld any plans to attack Hell again and begrudgingly accompanied them as they attempted to try and make peace with Hell's inhabitants, though she refused to participate in negotiations. In "Curtain Call" she also followed Abel's command when he told her to stand down, though she was visually irritated by this.

When Adam died, an emotionally broken Lute rushed to his side and tearfully screamed his name, which showed that she deeply cared about him outside of their professional relationship. His death would motivate her to openly advocate for the decimation of everyone in Hell, sinner or not, using Heaven's risked safety and the perceived threat that she believes Hell poses to it as pretexts, and will often use genocidal rhetoric when referring to Hell's denizens.

Despite grieving the loss of a loved one, Lute is completely remorseless to the fact that she most definitely inflicted the same emotions of anguish and despair against Hell's population, and even smirked when confronted about the fact by Vox. This showcases the dichotomy in her moral compass, as she callously views the killings of sinners as "justifiable" but is completely angered and frustrated by the fact that no one in Heaven seems to mourn or even care that Adam was killed in an extermination, ironically enough this being an "eye for an eye" situation, something that she sung about in Gravity.

At her core, Lute is uncompromising, refusing to give up her mission and purpose as an Exorcist, even viewing mercy as an unforgivable insult. She was willing to tear off her left arm in a fury to continue the fight against Vaggi and even went as far as to tell the Speaker of God that she was willing to give her life for Heaven. She is also unwilling to accept Sir Pentious' redemption, still seeing him as a sinner instead of a redeemed winner, and would use his story of when he was alive and his attack on Adam as evidence against his character, even claiming that Sir Pentious himself killed Adam when in fact it was the other way around; this however might have been an attempt on her part to discredit Sir Pentious or, just as likely, a result of Lute having a distorted view of what happened during the last extermination (as she claims that Sir Pentious was under Lucifer's command) as well as a delusional belief that Adam (and angels in general) could do no wrong.

It has also been shown that Lute is pragmatic enough to know when a fight is lost: After Adam is killed and the army is left at the mercy of Lucifer, Charlie and their allies, Lute took Adam's halo and called for the Exorcists to retreat.

Despite this, Lute's determination in her mission shows her resourcefulness and tenacity, as she proceeds to use any resources at her disposal to keep the status quo of Heaven, further demonstrated by ordering Lilith to take care of Charlie or temporarily calling off the deal Lilith was part of. She also holds deep hatred and contempt towards Vaggi, seeing her as a traitor for even sympathizing with demons, going so far as to rip Vaggi's left eye out when she spared a sinner child as an exorcist and leaving her for dead. This hatred would exponentially increase following Adam's death.

Vivziepop explains that Lute is a character who sees herself as someone not taken as seriously as she thinks she should be, and as Adam was the only one who really gave her that purpose and that support. Without him, she has a great emptiness that she fills with a hallucination of him that exists in her mind, which is a manifested representation of Lute's deteriorating mental health and grief.[4]

As shown, this "Adam" has accurate mannerisms and personality to the real Adam, however, Lute understands on a subconscious level that this is not the real Adam, as the hallucination itself confirmed that "he" is merely a figment of her mind and he doesn't have any knowledge, memories, or personality traits from the real Adam that she doesn't know of as something consisted entirely of Lute's own memories and knowledge of him. Vivziepop says that because Lute knew him, this "Adam" is the Adam she remembers, but it is also Lute's version of him.[4] Nevertheless, Lute speaks and interacts with her illusion of Adam as if he is the real one.

In "Storyteller", Lute is shown to have a near-obsessive desire for revenge against all demons after Adam's death, showcased by her deteriorating mental health. Alongside this, she desperately keeps using Heaven's risked safety as an excuse to go down to Hell and kill everyone, even going as far as attempting to not only challenge Sera but also yell at The Speaker of God in order to plead her genocidal crusade, which she believes is the "clear choice" as she coldly told Emily in "Weapon of Mass Distraction".

Her hallucinated "Adam" also pushes Lute to avenge him and slaughter all the demons of Hell, encouraging her murderous impulses and desire for revenge. This would eventually lead to her taking advantage of an overloaded Might of Lilith in "Curtain Call", when she attempted to stop Emily, the Hazbin Hotel staff and Hell's Overlords from containing the cannon and preventing the partial destruction of Pentagram City, even though the explosion would have killed her as well.

Abilities[]

  • Flight - Lute has a set of wings to fly with at high speed.
  • Super strength - Lute is strong enough that she was able to rip her arm off when it was trapped under a pile of rubble. She was also able to rip Vaggi's original pair of wings off with her bare hands.
  • Enhanced endurance - Lute is able to shut off the pain of having to rip her arm off and still be able to fight one-on-one.
  • Gravity defiance - During the song Gravity, Lute is shown effortlessly walking up a large window and standing on it for several moments without flapping her wings, before leaping off and shattering the glass in the process.
  • Ocular illumination - Lute can make her eyes glow with white light that partially obscures her golden irises when at their brightest.

Skillset[]

  • Weapon Proficiency - As an Exorcist, Lute is skilled in using weapons like all the other Exorcists during the Exterminations. The weapon she most notably uses is a sword.

Trivia[]

  • Lute's name is an abbreviation of the word "lieutenant". It was initially supposed to be a placeholder name, but grew on Vivziepop.[5]
    • Interestingly, "lute" is also the name of stringed instruments with a neck and a rounded back, usually played by plucking.
  • Like Adam, she pronounces Vaggi's name with a soft "g".
  • In "The Show Must Go On", during her fight against Vaggi, Lute physically tore off her left arm, which in "Storyteller", it is shown that she has since received a golden replacement arm. However, Vaggi being able to regrow her wings in "Hello Rosie!" that had been torn off in the past may suggest that angels can grow back missing body parts. Because of this, it is currently unknown if Lute will regain her original missing arm.
  • The Exorcists in the pilot

    The Exorcists in the pilot

During the Hazbin Hotel pilot, one of the Exorcists shown during the introduction song bears a facial expression matching that of Lute's.
    • Furthermore, during the opening scenes of the pilot, a horned silhouette resembling an Exorcist is standing beside someone reminiscent of Adam. Given that Lute is Adam's second in command of the Exorcists, it is possible the silhouette may also be Lute.
  • In the Russian dub, Lute shares her voice actor with Loona from Helluva Boss, with both being voiced by Arina Kolotiuk.
  • In Season 1, Lute's sword was shown to be gold, while in Season 2 she is shown to have a silver sword, presumably due to her gold sword being stabbed into the Hotel's wall and her not retrieving it before returning to Heaven.
    • In a flashback in "Scream Rain," when she gouged out Vaggie's left eye, her sword was silver, but in a similar flashback in "Welcome to Heaven," it was gold. This was either an animation error or it references how Exorcists show little regard for their weapons and leaves them in Hell after an Extermination, implying that she's had her sword replaced before.
  • In a late 2025 interview, Vivziepop explains that she calls Lute a "Sleeper Villain", with a big set up and a clear goal throughout season 2, but she is constantly being restricted and put into a box. Vivziepop believes she needs time to develop since she is a ticking time bomb, and is established as a villain with problems that the world is not helping with.[6]
  • Lute appears to be ambidextrous, as shown during her brief duel with Vaggie in "Hear My Hope", where she switches her sword from her left hand at the beginning to her right hand partway through.
  • While hers and Adam's sexualities haven't been revealed Vivziepop has said they can be whatever. Jessica Vosk and Alex brightman (their respective voice actors) headcanon them as bisexual.
