The Rings of Hell seen in the maps app from Blitzo's phone.

The Rings of Hell are the seven different Rings that make up Hell's geography.

Description[]

Hell is divided into seven levels, each referred to as a "ring", and these rings are stacked on-top of each other. The top-most ring is the Pride Ring, where Sinners live and are unable to leave or traverse to other Rings. However, Hellborn demons are able to freely traverse all the Rings in Hell.[1] Additionally, the fallen angel and King of Hell, Lucifer, can travel through the rings as well.[2]

The rings that have appeared, so far, are the Pride, Greed, Wrath, Lust, Sloth, and Gluttony Rings, while the Envy Ring has yet to be shown. The names of the seven rings share the same names as each of the infamous Seven Deadly Sins.

Hellborn demons are known to be able to traverse the rings by an elevator transport system, furthermore, trains are capable of traveling from one ring to another and helicopters have been shown to use specialized elevator hangars to transfer themselves between different rings. Stolas, a member of the Ars Goetia, has been shown to be capable of creating portals to travel between rings. Whether Sinners are not allowed to leave the ring of Pride because of Hell's law or if they physically cannot do so is unknown.

Cultural relations[]

Sinners are not able to leave the Pride Ring or travel to the other rings for unknown reasons while Hellborn demons, and Lucifer, can travel freely across all the rings.

There are some situations where some of the Rings are disliked due to atmosphere, personal connections, or other reasons. For example, in "Hell's Belles", Sallie May called the Pride Ring, or more specifically Imp City, a "trash heap" despite never having visited before. In "Western Energy", a demon woman called Blitzo a "filthy Wrathian".

According to Striker, not every ring has or is a "fancy-ass city". One clear example is the Wrath Ring, which looks closely to that of a countryside location with several farms, ranches, mineshafts, etc.

Trivia[]

  • The concept of the Seven Rings dividing Hell is likely based on the Nine Circles of Hell defined in Dante Alighieri's The Divine Comedy. However, the seven rings have attributes that are not present in the Nine Circles such as Pride, a cardinal sin, although four of the seven sins — Greed, Gluttony, Lust, and Wrath — are present in the Nine Circles Cosmology.
    • While it has been stated in the series there are Seven Rings, the Nine Circles theme was briefly addressed by Vivienne in a stream,[3] and Katie Killjoy references the Nine Circles in the Hazbin Hotel pilot, making it unclear if this is a continuity error or a detail that has been retconned. According to Faustisse, Hell is not literally broken into nine levels, although Vivienne initially thought of entertaining the concept.[note 1]
      • In "Ozzie's", it is shown on a billboard that Imp City is located in the "second circle", however, as the city is located in the Pride Ring this implies the existence of both the "Seven Rings of Hell" and the "Nine Circles of Hell", with the nine circles possibly all existing within the Pride Ring.
    • Coincidentally, in the second part of the Divine Comedy, Purgatorio, the seven terraces of Purgatory were named after the seven deadly sins, making the concept of the Seven Rings of Hell an inverse to those terraces.
  • The sin naming pattern is incidentally part of demon class of the same name in Hell, thus implying an association between the two concepts.
  • In the elevator system, each ring has a designated color that matches the colors of their respective skies:
    • Pride: Red
    • Wrath: Orange
    • Gluttony: Yellow
    • Greed: Green
    • Lust: Blue
    • Envy: Purple
    • Sloth: Pink
      • Although Greed and Gluttony, as well as their respective colors, are not displayed in the elevator system, their colors can be indicated by the ring's skies and atmospheric palettes.
  • The colors of the seven Rings are intentionally based on a rainbow.[4]
    • In "Ozzie's", one of the apps on Blitzo's phone titled "MAPS" shows seven rings, each with a different color; the same colors as the seven jewels and the monitors in the elevator terminal, both in the order of a rainbow. The elevator screen shows five of the Rings and their respective color.
      • This indicates that the order the Rings are stacked in from top to bottom is Pride > Wrath > Gluttony > Greed > Lust > Envy > Sloth.
    • In Hazbin Hotel, there is a model shown in the background inside the hotel and in Lucifer's workshop that shows the seven rings of hell and their respective colors, similarly to that of a globe.
  • A shirt of "Verosika's Hell Tour" in SharkRobot merchandise shows the names of several locations across the rings of hell: Los Satanio for Wrath, Beezlehaven for Gluttony, Mint City for Greed, Crystal Stadium for Lust, Levitowne for Envy, and Dreamsville for Sloth.[5][6] However, it is currently not known whether the information listed on the shirt is canon in the show.
    • The places for Wrath, Gluttony, and Envy all have names that include those of mythological demons: Satan, Beelzebub, and Leviathan respectively.
  • In a mid-2024 interview, Vivziepop confirmed that Charlie and Lucifer Morningstar can travel across the Rings of Hell.[2]
    • This, and because the cherubs, Cletus, Collin, and Keenie, were able to go to the Lust Ring (albeit through a portal from Earth), may imply that angels of any kind are capable of traveling throughout the Rings of Hell. However, it is unknown if they are able to travel to the other rings through methods existing in Hell, such as the elevator.
