Overview

"I thought what I was doing was right for our people, but now... now I'm faced with knowing it was all... That this whole time those souls could, with more faith in them... be good, be changed. I-- What have I done?"
―Sera, to The Speaker of God about the Extermination against demons in Hell after seeing redemption is possible.

Sera is a seraphim angel and a supporting antagonist in Hazbin Hotel who made her debut in "Welcome to Heaven". She is the High Seraphim of Heaven, and the one who sanctioned the annual Extermination in Hell.

After personally witnessing the redemption of the sinner demon, Sir Pentious, Sera set about changing the rules of Heaven under the guidance of The Speaker of God.

Appearance

Humanoid form

In her humanoid form, Sera takes the appearance of a very tall and thin woman with cedar-brown skin, black lips, white freckles, and a white streak going down her nose. She also has hip-length, curled hair colored in a silver-like ombre.

Her eyes have white irises, blue-gray sclera, dark purple pupils, and dark purple thick eyelashes projecting from them. Atop her lashes are a pair of longer, holographic-like lashes, which are colored in a slightly paler shade of dark purple. Her eyelids are colored like her holographic-like lashes.

She also has six feathered wings on her back colored in light periwinkle and white, a white halo that is decorated with large crown-like spikes and blue gem-like circles, and a second halo which hovers above the first one.

Sera wears queen-inspired clothing which consists of a long-sleeved two-layered, periwinkle-gray gown with a high-frilled light periwinkle turtleneck collar, white and periwinkle-gray bouffant sleeves with white detailing, along with most of the bottom and hem colored in a light periwinkle and white with diamond designs around it.

Angelic form

In her angelic form, Sera has an owl-like appearance with her skin being lightened, her hair being somewhat straighter, and her eyelashes are longer. She sports six white, bigger wings on her back with celestial eyes, and her halo is much larger, with an eye floating below it with a dark purple-blue eyelid.

Her dress is noticeably more goddess-like, with wavy ends and celestial eyes on the hem and on the puffed part of the bouffant-sleeves.

Full Angelic form

In this form, Sera becomes much larger and covered with white plumage and has an elongated neck with a jagged, draconic beak. Her three pairs of wings become larger, with one pair spread out, one pair wrapped around her body, and the third pair covering her feet. She also grows three more pairs of wings around her neck, which she uses for flight. Seven blue eyes float around Sera's head, and her halo becomes larger.

Personality

Sera comes across as a kind, level-headed person who is caring toward those she interacts with and welcoming to even demons such as Charlie and Vaggie. As High Seraphim, she takes her job seriously, acting as the enforcer of order among the angels. This extends to her abiding civil behavior, as she seems upset when Charlie loudly curses in the court. She holds a preference for negotiation over violence when it comes to conflict, such as when she is willing to hear Charlie out on her plan to resolve the overpopulation crisis in Hell. Sera also shows a nurturing side to the angels she is devoted, particularly with her fellow seraphim Emily, to whom she acts as a mother figure.

Due to her peaceful nature, Sera greatly disapproves of Adam's juvenile and spiteful tendencies and the more violent and bloodthirsty of Exorcists, such as Lute. This is shown when Sera disapproves of Adam's declaration of targeting the Hazbin Hotel as the first area for him and his Exorcists to slaughter in the next Extermination. Sera deems his actions as uncalled-for and disapproves of Adam's delight and bloodthirst at doing so.

Despite her gentle nature, Sera's firm dedication to stability and willingness to do whatever it takes to protect Heaven from chaos leads her to perform controversial actions. This even motivated her to allow Adam's yearly Extermination. Her care for the other angels also factors into these decisions, fearing the same outcome that happened to Lucifer would happen to Emily and other angels if they questioned Heaven's methods, going as far as to protect Emily from the truth to ensure her happiness.

Although she was complicit, Sera does express regret and anguish when making such decisions, claiming that creating an Extermination to wipe out sinners yearly was a hard decision but was a required action. Furthermore, Sera herself showed numerous times that she greatly empathized with Charlie and her dreams of redeeming sinners, but ultimately considers it impossible to accomplish, and thus Sera does what she believes is best with what she thinks is possible. This shows that when it comes to upholding the peace, Sera will act by underhanded means to silence questioning the rules to ensure this, even if it goes against what she believes in or ignoring how other angels feel in the matter. This was shown later when Sera ultimately rejected Charlie's proposal to accept rehabilitated souls, even after acknowledging that the rules of redemption were unknown.

Furthermore, despite regretting allowing the Exterminations and her strong sense of responsibility to protect Heaven, Sera has also shown to be somewhat negligent or irresponsible in the direct handling of matters regarding the Extermination event she authorized and takes a passive approach by letting others handle it. This is repeatedly shown when she leaves almost everything regarding the Extermination to Adam and Lute, and does not get into the details of what exactly it is they are doing and largely leaves them to their own devices. This was also shown when Charlie travelled to Heaven to plead her cause to the Heavenly Court; in order to hide the Extermination from her fellow angels, Sera ordered Adam to do whatever he needed to do something to stop her, not bothering to handle it herself or get into the details of how he would do it. Her lack of control over her subordinates inevitably leads to Adam accidentally revealing the truth of the event to the rest of the members of the Court while spitting at Charlie, despite Sera warning him.

It is implied during the court trial in "Welcome to Heaven" that Sera does not believe it is possible for sinners to be redeemed and ascend into Heaven, and at the climax of the trial declared that there was not sufficient evidence to back up Charlie's case that sinners could be redeemed. Later, in "The Show Must Go On", when seeing Sir Pentious becoming an angel and being let into Heaven, Sera is visibly shocked. All of this is later shown in "Storyteller" during the trial of Sir Pentious after his ascension to Heaven, with Sera initially refusing to accept that redemption is possible, maintaining that souls can't change their fate, and choosing to believe that Sir Pentious forced his way into Heaven or St. Peter allowed him to pass the gate. However, after The Speaker of God confirms he was able to atone for his sins, becoming a cleansed soul, Sera finally accepts that it is possible for a soul to achieve redemption, and the revelation of the moment makes her feel so moved that she even shed a tear, and decides that Sir Pentious should remain under the care of Heaven.

Deeply regretting all the souls killed in the Exterminations, Sera later confesses to The Speaker that she feels she has sinned. Having believed she was leading Heaven's people righteously, now faced with the truth, Sera feels she hasn't been a good leader and has made the wrong decisions, knowing now that they could have saved souls, but acknowledges that after experiencing years of slaughter and terror, the sinners have a reason to fight back and take their pain out on Heaven. Her desperation to know what the next right course of action regarding how much of a threat Hell could be led her to take the drastic decision of isolating Heaven from other realms as a security protocol. It is also implied that being the leader and ruling over Heaven, having millions of souls under her charge, is starting to take a toll on her.

In "Storyteller", she seems to rely on other people making decisions for her and giving her instructions because of the stress and desperation of leading and protecting Heaven. This was the case when Adam pitched the Extermination to her and, believing it was for the good of her people despite it going against what Heaven was meant to stand for, allowed it. After realizing it wasn't the right choice, she asks The Speaker how she should atone, but she says Sera must speak with her own voice. Sera meets with St. Peter and Abel, requesting any suggestions and ideas, but, when neither of them had a helpful or reliable idea, she dismisses them and chooses to make the choice.

During "Silenced" she got angry at Vox and the other sinners for not caring about their apologies about the extermination, and later she even admitted that hell wanted war.

Abilities

  • Longevity - As told in "Overture", Sera has existed since before the creation of the Earth, meaning she is at least thousands of years old and presumably is unable to die of old age.
  • Angelic power - Being the High Seraphim, she has powerful angelic power. While joining her fellow angels in "Storyteller", they were able to generate a holy energy barrier to protect the entirety of Heaven.
  • Angelic transformation - As shown in "Welcome to Heaven", Sera can transform from her standard angel form into a humanoid one. In "Silenced", she took on a much more abstract variation of her angel form, being even larger and more akin to biblical Seraphim.
  • Creation - As told in "Overture", Sera was among the angels who expanded the universe.
  • Flight - As an angel, she has wings that are capable of flight.
    • Levitation - Sera can be seen always levitating.
  • Teleportation - Sera can teleport herself and others to any location she wishes by covering them with her glowing wings.

Skillset

  • Musical talent - She is adept at singing.

Sera & Emily

Sera worried for Emily

Sera cares greatly for Emily and is overprotective of her, even keeping Emily naïve about the Exterminations as she thought she should shoulder the burden as the older angel. When Emily found out the truth about the Extermination, Sera tried to explain to Emily that it was a tough decision she had to make in order to protect Emily and all the angels in heaven.

As Emily sides with Charlie about Heaven being hypocritical, Sera desperately tries to stop her. After the trial was over, Sera tells Emily that they need to look after their people and not question on what they do. Sera has the fear that if Emily began to question the system then she could end up a fallen angel like Lucifer.

Despite their disagreement at first, Sera and Emily still care about each other, as seen in "Storyteller".

Adam

Sera is Adam's superior. She can get rather annoyed with Adam's immaturity. Sera allowed Adam's idea of the Extermination explicitly under the condition to keep it a secret from the rest of Heaven.

In "Welcome to Heaven", Sera was upset that Adam accidentally revealed to the court about the Extermination, but still allowed him to continue the Extermination as there was no evidence that sinners could be redeemed. When Adam threatened about going to the Hotel first during the upcoming Extermination, and because of how upset Charlie and Vaggie looked, Sera gave Adam a stern glare for his uncalled for spite, which he then apologized for.

Lute

Sera is Lute's superior. She can get rather annoyed with Lute's bloodthirsty tendencies.

In "Storyteller", Sera has gotten fed up with Lute's disrespect towards Sir Pentious, and especially The Speaker of God, going as far as to tell her to stop disrupting the trial and signal her disagreement towards Lute's extreme opinions. She gets angry when Lute tells her she went to Lilith about stopping Charlie, and told Lute to put a stop to any plans she had and to report to Abel, her new commander, or else it will be labeled as treason.

St. Peter

Sera is St. Peter's superior. In "Welcome to Heaven" He is shown to revere her as she comes down to welcome Charlie to Heaven.

She then questioned Peter if he had let Sir Pentious in, but he swore to the Speaker that he did not let him in, Sera later then calls him to a private meeting where she asks for his opinion on what actions will be made concerning the threat of Hell, but Peter says that he just watches the door, she then thanks him for his time since the decision is here to make.

Abel

Sera is Abel's superior. Abel generally respects and doesn't question her much, as seen in "Storyteller". Sera requests him to a private meeting where she asks for his opinion on what actions will be made concerning the threat of Hell, but as Abel was very hesitant on the matter since he didn't like confrontation or revenge and was mostly unsure about it, he wasn't much help. However, he tries his best to support her when she has to make a decision of what must be done.

Sir Pentious

When Sir Pentious proved redemption was possible in "The Show Must Go On", Sera was greatly shocked at the revelation. At first, Sera refused to believe in Sir Pentious and a trial was held where she demanded answers from him in "Storyteller". However, she came to believe in him after The Speaker of God proved that Sir Pentious' redemption was genuine, and allowed him to be a soul in Heaven's care.

Speaker of God

Sera and The Speaker

The Speaker of God is Sera's superior, and acts as her guide and mentor. When Sera shows guilt for allowing the Exterminations to happen, now knowing it was for nothing since redemption for a sinner has now proven to be possible, she turns to The Speaker for guidance. The Speaker reassures her that remorse and understanding are both part of redemption, while giving her comfort for her mistakes, but wants her to find her own answers and atone.

Hell's Royal Family

Charlie Morningstar

Sera was rather welcoming to Charlie entering heaven in "Welcome to Heaven", despite being the daughter of Lucifer, but did remind Charlie that she's only staying for one day. Sera thinks of her as misguided and that she was bringing trouble to Heaven's door.

Sera gave a disapproved look when Charlie swore in the angelic court, but let it slide to give her a second chance to plead her case. Sera expressed sympathy for Charlie about trying to prove that sinners could be redeemed by showing Angel Dust protecting Niffty from Valentino, but as Angel Dust didn't get into Heaven and gave no evidence of redemption Sera ruled that there was no proof a sinner could be redeemed.

Lucifer Morningstar

It's unknown what relationship Sera had with Lucifer, but it can be assumed that she, along with the elders of Heaven, believed Lucifer was a troublemaker and rejected his ideas. However, in "Welcome to Heaven" shows that Sera does express pity and sympathy for Lucifer when he was banished to Hell for bringing evil to Earth. His becoming a fallen angel also caused Sera to fear the same thing would happened to Emily.

Lilith

She knew Lilith as the first woman on Earth before being cast into Hell. It is currently unknown what relationship they have, but she was aware of her stay in Heaven and may have a part in it as she grew angry at Lute for going against orders and telling Lilith to go and stop Charlie in Hell.

Trivia

  • Sera's name may be a shortening of the type of angel she is, a Seraphim.
    • Her name could also be a reference to Seraphiel, an angel mentioned in the Apocryphal Book of Enoch who is also said to be the highest-ranking member of the Seraphim.
    • Sera's angelic form may be an evocation of the Hebrew term for Seraph, which in biblical texts was also used to describe snakes and serpents.
  • Sera, along with Emily, has an otherworldly, many-eyed angelic form she changes between her more human-like form. She can also cause more eyes to appear on her Halo and hair. However, it is unknown whether this shift between appearances is a result of transformation or a heavenly disguise.
    • Strangely, while in her partial form, Sera has eyes in her hair even though she does not have any in her humanoid or angelic forms.
  • As part of the "Hazbin Hotel x Animate Cafe" collaboration event held in Japan from October 8 to December 12, 2025, there was a menu item referring to Sera and Emily as "Seraphim Sisters",[1] however, it is currently unknown whether them being sisters is canon within the Hazbin Hotel series.
