The Seven Deadly Sins are a class of Demons who represent the primary ruling body of Hell. Aside from Lucifer Morningstar himself, they rank directly beneath the royal family in Hell's hierarchy.[1]
As their name suggests, each of them embody each of the seven deadly sins; Pride, Wrath, Gluttony, Greed, Lust, Envy, and Sloth[2] and share the names with the Rings of Hell.
Description
The Seven Deadly Sins represent the law and order of Hell, tasked with keeping the affairs of the demon hierarchy in a controlled system. Its members consist of powerful, high-ranking demons with abilities grand enough to influence the environment and entities of Hell itself. These demons hold a position of influence in the rings that represent their respective sin, with themselves overseeing the operations of the ring and their respective populace. Because of this, the matters of the sins are relatively isolated from each other. However, the sins will come together during a time when a violation concerning Hell's laws and the established hierarchy takes place, and collectively carry out the judgment.
One member is designated as the leader of the other sins, typically by influence and power. The order was founded by Lucifer Morningstar, a Fallen Angel who served for a time as both the Deadly Sins' leader and the ruler of all of Hell. However, with Lucifer's absence, Satan took advantage of his desertion to subsume control, thereby becoming the effective ruler of Hell, with the Deadly Sins forced to carry on without Lucifer. Although the members are of equal footing outside of their leader, this does not indicate members often respect each other; internal conflict can happen between Deadly Sins, as is the case with Asmodeus and Mammon, the latter of whom once threatened the former.
Cultural relations
The Deadly Sins are strongly associated with the species and inhabitants of the rings they hail from. The Deadly Sins themselves generally serve in the interest of upholding Hell's power hierarchy, as such they are derogatory toward weaker demons, although can make occasional exceptions. Like most of Hell's elitist mindset, intermingling between these demons and lower-class demons are looked down upon, considering it a disgrace against the natural order of Hell's society.

Trivia
- The class appears to be inspired by the real-life classification of demons called The Seven Princes of Hell from the 16th century Tractatus De Confessionibus Maleficorum Et Sagarum ("Treatise on the Confessions of Witches and Sorcerers"), by Peter Binsfeld.
- Notably, Binsfeld's classification was based on an anonymous text from the 15th century, The Lanterne of Light, which associates a specific demon with each of the Seven Deadly Sins. Like The Lanterne of Light, Binsfeld's classification associates a specific demon with each of the Seven Deadly Sins, however, Binsfeld's classification varies from the former in some aspects. For example, while The Lanterne of Light depicts the sin of Sloth as Abaddon, Binsfield lists it under Belphegor. Binsfeld's classification also list additional demons who are also associated with the Seven Deadly Sins, such as Lilith, associated with the Deadly Sin of Lust. In the Hellaverse, however, Lilith is portrayed as a separate individual from the class.
- It is, so far, unknown if they all rule over their own rings, since Lucifer (who is part of the classification representing the deadly sin of Pride), rules the ring of Pride, but also all of Hell.
- It is unknown if all of the Deadly Sins will even appear in both shows. So far, only Lucifer and Belphegor have been referenced in both series by name.
- The designs of the Deadly Sins fall in their respective descriptions found throughout Abrahamic lore.
- Lucifer is described as an angel who retains his brilliant appearance even as a demon, albeit with his wings cut off.
- Satan is often depicted as being a horned demon with bat-like wings, a pointed tail, and possessing a pitchfork - which in the show has been transcribed into the design of his horns.
- Beelzebub is modelled after an insect, but based on bees instead of flies, unlike her classic depiction's association with them, more akin to the hornet depiction from the Dictionnaire Infernal.
- Mammon is sometimes depicted as a large man or giant decorated in gold with ivory skin.
- Asmodeus is described as a man with the heads of a ram, human, and bull, and the legs of a rooster.
- Leviathan is described in the lore as being a sea serpent, with some depictions featuring multiple heads.
- Belphegor's caprine-like features are meant as a nod to Baphomet.
- According to Vivziepop, Leviathan and Satan were the most traditional in sticking with the usual themes, but at the time of June 26, 2023, she was still working on finalizing their designs.[4]
- The representative for each of the sins are based on a circus act, meant to form a collective circus troupe ruled by Lucifer.[2]
- It can be assumed that Lucifer represents the ringleader due to being the ruler of the other sins and his ringleader-esque attire.
- Beelzebub represents the animal tamer/animal shows.[5]
- It can be assumed that Mammon represents the clown due to his attire and aesthetic, as well as being his role in his debut episode, however this has not been confirmed.
- It was implied that having the title "sin" denotes demons as members of this class. So far, only two individuals were identified with this title to embody their respective sins: Lucifer and Satan. Similar to this, Asmodeus, the owner of a sexually-oriented dinner theater restaurant found in the Lust Ring, was labeled as "The Embodiment of Lust". In "The Circus", it is revealed that the members are formally referred to as "King/Queen Sins". The label of "sin" was used to confirm the class' member by Vivziepop in a tweet,[2] while a newspaper article confirmed the title of "deadly sin" denotes them as such in "Mastermind".
- In a stream, Vivienne Medrano stated in Helluva Boss, Satan is the "sin of Wrath" whom imps view as a deity-like figure, hence why many characters have cursed by Satan's name in a few episodes.[3] A "Satan Bless" sign can be seen being held by a homeless demon in the non-canon pilot episode of Helluva Boss.
- Prior to their full appearances, some of the deadly sins were referenced throughout Helluva Boss, albeit before their being part of the class was confirmed. Mammon was first mentioned as the owner of a theme park in the ring of Greed, matching his representation in the classification as the sin of Greed. In "Spring Broken" and "Queen Bee", Beelzebub, who is represented as Gluttony, was alluded to the alcoholic beverage, Beelzejuice. Beelzebub was also mentioned in the lyrics for "House of Asmodeus" in "Ozzie's".
- In "The Circus", Belphegor is alluded to through Stolas' Belphegor-themed Happy Pills seen throughout his adulthood.
- Out of the sins, Beelzebub, Belphegor, and Leviathan are all female in the series, as opposed to real-life depictions of the seven Princes who are all typically male.
- Prior to Beelzebub's official appearance, the lyrics for "House of Asmodeus" in "Ozzie's" implied Beelzebub is female. This was later shown to be the case with Beelzebub's debut in "Queen Bee".
- Belphegor, who is represented by Sloth, is mentioned by Beelzebub in the latter episode as being female as well.
- In "Ozzie's" shown on Blitzo's phone has seven apps that are themed after a demon of the deadly sins from the Binsfield classification or the sin they represent.
The apps on Blitzo's phone
- Lucimaster for Lucifer
- Lustinder for Asmodeus
- Satan's Workouts for Satan
- Bee Eats for Beelzebub
- Moneymakerz Bank for Mammon
- Sleepy Pillz for Belphegor
- Envee for Leviathan
- In "Oops", it is implied the Sins may be capable of making deals, which Stolas claims can be "everlastingly binding".
- According to Crimson, Asmodeus is the weakest and most non-threatening of the sins, however it is unknown if this is true or was just a taunt or insult from Crimson.
- It could also be a reference to Dante Alighieri's Inferno where Lust is regarded as the least bad sin for which people are damned.
- In "MAMMON'S MAGNIFICENT MUSICAL MID-SEASON SPECIAL (ft Fizzarolli)", according to Asmodeus, he has known Mammon since "the start of Hell", implying that the two are as old, or older, than Hell itself. While it is unknown if the other deadly sins share this, Lucifer is known to have existed since before the expansion of the universe and creation of Earth, and so before the creation of Hell.
- "MAMMON'S MAGNIFICENT MUSICAL MID-SEASON SPECIAL (ft Fizzarolli)" is the first episode to have a Deadly Sin debut whose title card directly features the Sin in question, whilst Asmodeus' was merely his logo, and Beelzebub's only features her silhouette within her logo.
- This is also the first time two of the Seven Deadly Sins appear in one episode, and the first time there is conflict between them.
- In a video posted on July 5, 2024, when asked if it is possible to get all Seven Deadly Sins to talk in the same room, Vivziepop answered that she does really badly want to, and we will see six of them in something coming "potentially soon", but as Lucifer is part of Hazbin Hotel it is a bit tricky, however she hopes eventually all seven can do that.[6] Six of the seven sins ended up being shown together in the Helluva Boss episode "Mastermind".
- During the episode "Mastermind", Blitzo's phone reads a news article celebrating I.M.P for surviving their trial, stating they were the first Hellborns to ever survive a trial by the Seven Sins.
- In a Polygon interview, Vivziepop confirmed that each of the Seven Deadly Sins has created a species of Hell.[7]
- Lucifer created the Goetia. Vivziepop explains that, being from Heaven himself, thematically there is an element of heavenliness to some of the Goetia, and spiritually it makes sense as they technically originated from an angelic place through Lucifer.[7]
- Vivziepop also explains that although many of the Goetia being birds is due to playing off the Ars Goetia text that describes many of the demons as birds, Vivziepop enjoys the proposed idea that they are birds due to Lucifer's obsession with birds, as she likes playing up his enjoyment of birds, so she believes it works out.[7]
- In "Mastermind", Satan reveals he created the imps.
- Lucifer created the Goetia. Vivziepop explains that, being from Heaven himself, thematically there is an element of heavenliness to some of the Goetia, and spiritually it makes sense as they technically originated from an angelic place through Lucifer.[7]
