Overview
- "You acted selfless. You cared more for the lives of others than your own. And made the ultimate sacrifice. You were able to atone. You are a cleansed soul. A free soul. You have nothing left to fear here."
- ―The Speaker of God to Sir Pentious
The Speaker of God is an angel and a supporting character who made her debut in the episode "Storyteller".
Appearance[]
The Speaker of God is a beautiful statuesque avian female angel with white and gold plumage similar to a phoenix, with bright blue eyes that occasionally glow purple and extremely long eyelashes, with the top lashes being curled. She possesses six wings, similar to Emily, Sera and Lucifer, although they are much larger and she seems to be able to selectively hide pairs if she chooses. The Speaker of God has a glowing halo with multiple golden rays crowning her head, as well as long, wavy blonde hair which flows continuously and fades into the same color as the markings at the top. She is surrounded by a majestic glowy aura at all times.
The Speaker of God wears a layered dress with feather-like hems and colors of ivory red, off-white, light yellow, and a slightly darker shade of yellow compared to her hair. Underneath this dress are three, almost scroll-like attachments that trail behind her.
Personality[]
The Speaker of God is a benevolent, kind, wise, and empathetic being, allowing Sir Pentious to explain himself about how he got to ascend to Heaven, and politely welcomed him to their realm. The Speaker is also patient, withstanding Lute's erratic and impulsive behavior and her demands about not letting Sir Pentious stay there.
She acts as a confessor of sorts that angels beneath her in Heaven can confess their sins to, whether in official public settings or in private, so that she may ease their emotional burdens and provide comfort and divine wisdom onto them. In the same way God often did in the Bible, she seems to question people—not because they don't know the answer, but to test or reveal something about the respondent.
Unlike most of the angels, The Speaker is quite tolerant and open-minded, as she not only believed Sir Pentious' story but accepted redemption of sinners in Hell is possible, and they could go to Heaven if they atone. She also offered to High Seraphim Sera the space to be vulnerable in private and say what is tormenting her after seeing her feelings of concern.
The Speaker can also emotionally react; changing her demure attitude if anyone makes an untrue statement, at least with her being present. One example is when Lute called herself the new commander of the army of the Exorcists when it was actually Abel who received the position.
Abilities[]
- Longevity - The Speaker of God has existed since before the creation of the world, meaning that she is at least thousands if not, millions of years older than the Earth and is presumably incapable of dying of old age.
- Angelic Power - As an angel of an even higher rank than the seraphim angels, The Speaker of God possesses extremely powerful angelic abilities.
- Size alteration - The Speaker of God can alter her size at will, from being only slightly taller than Sera to large enough to stand several courtroom floors tall. She is also seemingly able to apply this to her wings too independent to her body's size, though this doesn't seem to have an effect on her ability to fly.
- Flight - As an angel, she has wings with which she can fly.
- Retractable Wings - The Speaker has shown to seemingly hide the number of wings she possesses if she chooses, seamlessly merging the pairs of wings together mid-action such as she declared Pentious redeemed and welcomed him to Heaven, her six wings becoming two upon landing on the ground. This allows her to manifest her wings either as the full three pairs, two pairs, a single pair, and she can even hide the wings entirely.
- Conjuration - With her powers, she can create various images made of golden light.
- Photokinesis - She can generate and control a golden glow.
- Teleportation - She can teleport between two locations in a glow of light.
- Cosmic awareness - As an angel who speaks on behalf of God, she possesses and demonstrates an awareness of distant events she wasn't present for in a similar way God knows everything past, present, and future. This is evident in how she already knows Sir Pentious' former name and physically animates past events exactly as they occurred back in Season 1 from Pentious' sacrifice or the Exterminations approved by Sera, suggesting she's not seeking answers but encouraging honesty and introspection. However, although she is able to be aware of many events beyond her presence, she seems to not be aware of a person's thoughts until spoken out loud, as she was surprised and confused when Lute declared herself as Head of the Exorcist Army despite Abel being made the new leader, as well as being concerned and hurt when Lute sprouted her hatred of Hell and denial that demons could be redeemed.
- Lie detection - The Speaker of God can sense the presence of lies in the words of those she listens to, being absolutely certain that Sir Pentious wasn't lying when he told his story and how he got to ascend Heaven.
Skillset[]
- Musical talent - The Speaker of God is able to sing, as evidenced by her song with Sera.

"Storyteller"[]
The Speaker of God came into the Room of the Speaker, when she came in and told Sera to calm herself and flew down to Sir Pentious and told him to tell his story. And while Sir Pentious was nervous about it at first, he asked who she was and she explained that she was "The Speaker of God". He then told the court his past life as a human in London (1888), and as she told him to continue his story he told them about his sin that got him in Hell, and asked why he is here now as she held his hand. Sir Pentious said he doesn't know how while crying but told her that his friends were in danger, Cherri was in danger and that he would do something about it. The Speaker of God wipes away Pentious's tears, and thanked him for telling him his story.
The Speaker told him that he acted selfless and cared more for the lives of others than his own and had made the ultimate sacrifice in battle, and told him he was able to atone and now he is a cleansed and free soul who has nothing left to fear here and as Pentious hugs her, she then told the room he has now atoned for the sins of his life and in the past and is now "a soul who understands and was willing to overcome", and welcomes him to Heaven while calling him by his former name Pendleton, but he tells her that he doesn't use that name anymore and introduces himself as "Sir Pentious".
When Lute comes up to her and says that she is "wise far beyond her" she tells her Sir Pentious came from the depths of Hell and is aligned with the princess, and therefore he cannot be trusted but The Speaker tells her she senses no lies, but Lute tells her that he was under the command of Lucifer Morningstar, the first fallen angel and his daughter and that it was her who called out for redemption and somehow managed to find it through the death of one of them. And as Lute declares herself the new head of the Exorcist army, The Speaker questions what she said before Abel interrupts her that he's the new head since the others thought he would handle the situation more fairly.
Soon, Lute begs her about the destruction she witnessed that the demons have caused them and states she has lost so much and has endured and is willing to give her life for Heaven to stop the demons, and later demands The Speaker and the rest of the angels to go down and confront them before Sera comes in telling her to not address The Speaker in that way before the trial ends and everyone leaves.
Sera, still reeling in the revelation of a sinner being redeemed now possible, asks The Speaker for advice. The Speaker comforts her for her mistake with ordering the Exterminations, telling her that she must accept what happened so she can learn from her mistakes and look within for further enlightenment in a song before taking her leave.
Relationships[]
Sir Pentious[]
- "You acted selfless. You cared more for the lives of others than your own, and made the ultimate sacrifice. You were able to atone. You are a cleansed soul. A free soul. You have nothing left to fear here."
- ―Speaker of God, to Sir Pentious
The Speaker of God shows him comfort, gently asks him for his story and why he is in Heaven now. After his story was finished, she explains to him he redeemed himself for his sin in life and welcomes him to Heaven warmly, even letting him hug her as he cries. She also showed no doubt in his word when Lute accused him of lying, though this may be her ability to detect lies.
Sera[]
- "♫ One seeks an answer that one cannot grant her. You're looking for light only you can ignite. Every transgression must serve as a lesson. Yesterday you drew sorrow, what will you do tomorrow?"
- ―Speaker of God, to Sera
The Speaker of God serves as the superior and mentor of Sera, acting as a guiding and almost maternal figure to her. When Sera discovers redemption is possible, she grows distressed, realising the Extermination may not have been necessary if sinners were capable of change. The Speaker reassures her that remorse and understanding are both part of true redemption. She explains how forgiveness can only exist when one accepts the weight of their actions and makes effort to atone for them. Despite her calm tone, The Speaker encourages Sera to face her doubts rather than suppress them, believing that questioning faith is a natural part of growth. To her, even the most devoted must learn to live with their mistakes and continue forward with honesty and purpose.
Lute[]
As with Sera, Lute is another subordinate of The Speaker of God. At Sir Pentious' trial, she remained patient and calm and was willing to listen to Lute's arguments against Sir Pentious despite their disagreements on how to deal with the residents of Hell, and while Lute tried to convince her they shouldn't trust him since Sir Pentious is from Hell and is aligned with the princess and he may be lying, The Speaker didn't sense any lies from him and while Lute tried to convince her about the threat of demons that she had witnessed and that she will do anything to stop the demons, Lute urged her and the rest of them to go down and retaliate against them, which made The Speaker visibly distressed by her madness.

Trivia[]
- In Christianity, a closely related figure is the Holy Spirit. Like the Speaker, it is depicted as a bird full of light and is considered something that emanates directly from God.
- This character also might be based on Metatron, a figure primarily found in Jewish mysticism. In Jewish tradition, Metatron is said to be the highest of the angels, often associated with divine authority and acting as a celestial scribe who records the actions of humanity. In Kabbalistic teachings, Metatron is often depicted as a mediator between the divine and material worlds, responsible for conveying God's will to the lower realms.
- Her dialogue during her interaction with Lute regarding Sir Pentious' story implies that The Speaker can sense lies, although it is unclear whether this is an actual ability of hers or simply an expression of compassion.
- According to Vivziepop in a Polygon interview about The Speaker of God, The Speaker's design being reminiscent of Goetia demons is an artistic coincidence, not an intended connection. Vivziepop explains that The Speaker has some design elements from how she draws the Goetia, as stoic birds, but The Speaker is meant to be a phoenix with a lot of "mystical bird energy".[2]
- Another reason, she says, is due to Lucifer having created the Goetia, and because he came from Heaven, aesthetically there is an element of heavenliness to some of the Goetia. As such, The Speaker's similarities to the bird members of the Goetia also makes sense spiritually as the Goetia technically originated from an angelic place through Lucifer.[2]
- Although The Speaker of God refers to speaking for God, Vivziepop considers the concept of God to be so ethereal and beyond comprehension by just its nature that she doesn't ever want to fully depict it. As such, The Speaker is the closest the Hellaverse will have to what is viewed as God, as a being that represents God but is not God.[2][3]
